Gao Liu Honored with Electrochemical Society Battery Division Technology Award

November 21, 2025

The Electrochemical Society presented fellow Gao Liu, senior scientist and leader of the Applied Energy Materials Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, with the prestigious Battery Division Technology Award at its annual ceremony in Chicago.

This award has recognized outstanding global contributions to battery and fuel cell technologies for 32 years, such as Liu’s pioneering work with electrode binders — the important component of modern lithium-ion batteries.

In his symposium seminar, Liu connected electrode polymer binder fundamentals to innovation in the next generation of high-performance energy storage systems.

“Electrode binders perform a variety of functions in batteries, serving as an important component in the development of modern Li-ion batteries. They are also a significant component in the overall battery manufacturing process” said Liu.

Liu has dedicated his 20+ year career to building better systems for energy storage and conversion — an effort that has earned him three R&D 100 awards.
